Tord Gustavsen Ensemble

The Norweigan pianist Tord Gustavsen returns with an augmented line up for his latest album – featured on Jazzorama last week. Once again on the ECM label, ‘Restored, Returned’ adds saxophone and vocals to the trio sound. Not to mention the words of WH Auden.

Here’s the official video of the album’s launch concert – the ECM sound personified. Recorded in Oslo on the 20th November last year.

Interview with Nick Mulvey of Portico Quartet

On last Saturday’s Jazzorama I spoke to Nick Mulvey of Portico Quartet, before they embark on a nationwide Irish Tour. Nick talked about their new album Isla, described by MOJO magazine as a brew of “… Steve Reich mathematics, Radiohead dread, African desert grooves and ECM northern melancholy …a chiming cavernous sound-world that is both exotic and hypnotic”.

Ken Clarke’s Jazz Greats

Former UK finance minister Ken Clarke has presented a number of radio series profiling great jazz musicians. I’ve just noticed that the latest edition is on one of Jazzorama’s favourties, Cannonball Adderley. Remarkably, it’s the eighth series from Ken – I love finding out that politicians have interests outside the corridors of power.

Go here on the BBC Radio 4 website to hear the programme on Cannonball (be quick as it’s only online for the next four days). Next week’s Ken Clarke’s Jazz Great is that epitome of West Coast Cool, Chet Baker.
